Omanthai entry point open today

[Tuesday, June 12, 2007 - 7.30 GMT]

Omanthai entry point will be open today, Tuesday June 12 from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m to enable devotees to participate freely at the annual feast of St. Anthony’s Church, Allappili, on a request made by the government agent, Kilinochchi from the Ministry of Defence.

The entry point is usually open only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays due to LTTE terrorist’s attacks.

Christian religious dignitaries had made representations on the need to secure an environment free of violence for their devotees to practise their religion. It should be recalled that the President assured the Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Revd. Oswald Gomis, the Bishop of Mannar Rt. Revd. Rayappu Joseph and the Bishop of Chilaw Rt. Revd. Valence Mendis that he would make all arrangements for a secure environment for pilgrims to freely engage in religious activities when they met him at Temple Trees, Colombo on May 29 to discuss the possibility of setting up a peace zone comprising the Madhu Church precincts and the surrounding areas.
