Special unit to deal with scaremongers

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has emphasized the need to implement a special programme to nab people spreading rumours causing panic among the people in
urban areas including Colombo.

Special attention was paid to this at a discussion chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning (12) at Temple Trees about the security in Colombo city and the problems faced by the Muslim community.

Following these discussions has been decided to appoint an Assistant Secretary of the President's Office to obtain relevant information regarding such scaremongering and related activities. Information can be provided to this special office through 24 hours daily. All information obtained will be treated with the strictest confidentiality. This office will function in
addition to the Special Operations Unit functioning under the Police Department.

The President has also instructed the Inspector General of Police to increase Police mobile patrols in the city and also use special motorcycle units for the purpose.

In addition it was decided to appoint a committee consisting representatives of the business community to supply relevant information.
