Terrorism a major challenge, says Indian Defence Minister

[Monday, June 18, 2007 - 9.00 GMT]

Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony addressing a two-day Conference for India’s top military brass said that terrorism and the role of non-state players are the major challenges facing them.

The Minister called for a new ‘security paradigm’ which ideally should be a mix of security cooperation, developing strategic partnerships and deterrence in consonance with India’s security and strategic interests. “Our strategic policy must reorient our relations with major powers, developing economies and our neighbours,” he said.

The Minister lamented that while globalization has been accompanied by widely accepted international rules to cope with its economic and commercial dimensions, similar mechanisms ‘are either absent or are still in the process of evolution’ when it comes to dealing with terrorism and the emergence of non-state players. He called upon the Commanders to factor the ‘changing security architecture’ while evolving our long-term strategic thought because the global war on terror has shifted the focus of major powers to the Asian region leading to realignments.

The Minister also said that the most crucial challenge facing Indian Armed Forces in the near future is the growing instability in India’s neighbourhood.
