Navy sinks five LTTE craft in North

[Wednesday, June 20, 2007 - 9.55 GMT]

The Sri Lanka Navy sank five LTTE craft of a flotilla comprising more than 15 Sea Tiger craft moving from the Kaddaikadu area south of Vettilaikerni towards Point Pedro in the sea off Jaffna yesterday (19).

Navy patrol boats engaged these armed vessels after they identified 15 to 20 armed LTTE craft close to Point Pedro, states the Media Centre for National Security.

Five LTTE Craft are reported have been destroyed by the Navy, and heavy damage inflicted on at least nine of the other LTTE craft.

It is estimated that at least 40 cadres of the LTTE's Sea Tigers had been killed in this confrontation. Intercepted LTTE signals have revealed that the LTTE cadres in the damaged vessels had appealed for assistance and reinforcements from their leaders, the MCNS said.
