[Wednesday, June 20, 2007 - 9.30 GMT]

Sri Lanka Embassy will soon establish a diplomatic mission in Palestine to further strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries and the Middle East, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa, when he met with the President of the World Muslim Congress at Temple Trees yesterday (19).

Representatives of the World Muslim  Congress are in Sri Lanka now to attend the 80th anniversary activities of Congress marked by a Seminar on "Muslims and their cooperation with other faiths", being held in Colombo in
collaboration with the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre.

The President of the World Muslim Congress, Dr. Abdullah Bin Omer Nasseef said President Rajapaksa is the best friend in Asia to all Muslim countries, including those of the Middle East; as such the World Muslim Congress was ready to support the development policies initiated by him as well as his moves to eradicate terrorism and bring about peace in Sri Lanka.

President Rajapaksa who appreciated the decision of the World Muslim Congress to hold its 80th anniversary activities in Sri Lanka said some who could not bear to see the friendship shown by this Government to the Muslim people were painting a wrong picture of Sri Lanka.

He expressed confidence that the development assistance Sri Lanka now receives from the Middle East would continue in the same manner.
