No VAT for 10 essential food items

The Government has decided to remove the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 10 essential food items, viz., potatoes, Bombay onions, dhal, sugar, red onions, dried chillies, canned fish, gram, green gram, dried sprats. This was disclosed at a meeting importers and traders had with President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (25) evening at Temple Trees, Colombo to discuss ways and means of stabilizing prices of consumer commodities.

  
The President also instructed the Fisheries Minister to take steps to reduce the price of fish, to transport the fish caught in the Eastern Province to Colombo and to purchase more fish from private dealers.
  
The importers also discussed the continuing escalation of imported milk food and urged the government to increase local production of milk and local consumption of liquid milk.
  
It was also decided to issue to the market rice stocks available in the granaries.
