Elections in East

The Government has decided to hold elections in the Eastern Province following the liberation of areas under the control of the LTTE.  Meanwhile, the Armed Forces are engaged in what is considered to be the final battle to capture the LTTE base at Thoppigala, their last remaining stronghold in the East. The armed action is, in fact, aimed at restoring democracy in the East.
  
It is learnt that the elections to the grassroots level local government bodies, the Pradeshiya Sabhas and Urban Councils will be held in the near future followed by elections to higher bodies afterwards.
