Majority of ‘disappeared’ had returned – Commissioner [Friday, June 29, 2007 - 10.45 GMT] Chairman of the Presidential Commission on abductions, disappearances and killings former High Court Judge Mahanama Tillakaratne told the media on June 28 at the BMICH, Colombo that majority of those who were reported to have disappeared had returned while a considerable number of abductees had known their abductors. According to the Chairman, of the 1713 reported to have disappeared 1002 had returned home and of the 307 complaints of abductions the alleged abductee had returned home in 132 cases. The Commission had also received 430 complaints of killings. Investigations are proceeding. The Commission had submitted two interim reports so far, one on December 12, 2006 and the second one on March 23, 2007 after receiving complaints from the public till November 7, 2006 after giving notice to the public on September 24, 2006 to send in their complaints to the Commission. Justice Tillakaratne also said that the final report will bring into notice of the Government on the positive measures and recommendations, which should be undertaken by the law enforcement authorities to prevent abductions, disappearances and unresolved killings. He also said that the Commission has advocated the setting up of an Independent Commission to look into Police action regarding complaints and recommended maximum humanitarian assistance to the affected families.
