Sri Lankan Office in Ramallah soon

[Friday, June 29, 2007 - 06.35 GMT]

The Government has decided to establish a Representative Office in Ramallah, the State of Palestine. Sri Lanka has been extending support to the Palestinian cause throughout and has supported the UN Resolutions 242 and 338, which recognize the right of Israel to exist while recognizing the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people including their right to a homeland.

Sri Lankan policy on Palestine has been consistent since July 1960 when Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike was the Prime Minister and the Minister of External Affairs.

There are 47 diplomatic missions in the form of representative offices in East Jerusalem, Ramallah and Gaza that are accredited to Palestinian Authority.   Asian countries, such as India, China and South Korea, have representative offices in Ramallah and Japan in Gaza.  The Sri Lankan office will be headed by an officer at the rank of Minister/Minister Counsellor, in accordance with the policy of Sri Lanka on Palestine and to ensure our continuous support and to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.
