Civil administration a prerequisite for political freedom of People in East – Defence Spokesman

[Tuesday, July 24, 2007 - 9.00 GMT]

The establishment of civil administration is a pre-requisite for people in the East to enjoy political freedom, said Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella at a press briefing this morning (24) in Colombo.

Since the LTTE is adamant that people should not be allowed to enjoy political freedom, including the exercise of their right of franchise, this poses a big challenge to the government, he added.

“Realizing the reality that economic freedom is a prerequisite to make political freedom meaningful, the Ministry of Finance has allocated Rs. 6.5 billion for the implementation of projects for the economic development of the Eastern Province. A strong foundation will be laid with the implementation of an accelerated development program scheduled to be completed in 180 days,” the Minister added.

“After the humiliating defeat in the East, tigers are planning to wreak havoc in the South. Several Lorries and motorcycles, laden with explosives have entered the city. So it is the paramount duty of the public to be extra vigilant and cooperate with the security forces”, he further said.

“The doors are open for the LTTE to enter the negotiations. The All Party Conference is now thrashing out a durable political solution to the problems of the Tamil people”, the Minister concluded
