Govt calls for civilian vigilance against terror

[Tuesday, July 24, 2007 - 7.00 GMT]

The Government has called for vigilance by civilians to thwart attempts by LTTE terrorists to cause havoc and destruction in the South, says a media release issued by the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) yesterday (23).

“Intelligence reports indicate that two trucks packed with C4 explosives have been sent to Colombo. These are desperate LTTE attempts to cover up their defeats in the Eastern Province which has now been liberated/”, the release further said.

Noting that vigilant civilians had prevented many terrorist attacks the MCNS specifically referred to the discovery of the 8-kg explosive pack discovered at the Sunday Fair at Delkanda, Nugegoda last week just 10 minutes before it was timed to explode.

The MCNS also assured the people that the Government has a well-coordinated security programme for the City of Colombo and appealed to them to show understanding in case of security measures that may disturb civilian life.
