Nine troops were killed and eight injured when LTTE terrorists detonated a powerful claymore mine targeting an army bus at Chettikulam in Vavuniya around 12.45 pm today (July 24).

According to Defence sources the mine targeted the bus carrying unarmed army personnel who were going on leave. The injured have been rushed to the General Hospital, Anuradhapura. The bus was said to be heading to Medawachchiya on the Mannar- Medawachchiya road.

Earlier today, Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasingha said there is a significant increase of LTTE activities in the Wanni front following its defeat in the Eastern Province. He told the media at the weekly briefing of the Media Centre for National Security that the Army would be compelled to crush the LTTE terrorists in the Wanni area if they continue attacks on civilians and the security forces.
