Foreign Minister calls for an end to terrorist funding

[Friday, August 03, 2007 - 5.00 GMT]

Our world will never be safe so long as funds are raised by terrorist groups in some countries to commit acts of terror in another, said Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama at the 14th ASEAN Regional Forum, Manila, The Philippines.

“We note with satisfaction that the international community is taking action in this regard. For instance, the LTTE among many others has been listed as a terrorist organization by India, the United States, the member states of the European Union and Canada, added the Minister.

“Given the vastly interdependent world of today, an economic downturn caused by a single terrorist act in one part of the globe will have an instant domino effect in markets far removed from it,” the Minister further said.

The Minister also welcomed the establishment of the South- East Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism in Putrajaya, Malaysia. “No doubt this institution would enable member countries to share their experiences of terrorism and keep themselves up dated regularly given the mutant strategies terrorists adopt,’ he noted.
