No threat to fishing in sea off Mutur, Mulativu and Alampil

[Tuesday, August 07, 2007 - 6.15 GMT]

Contrary to disinformation spread by the LTTE there is no threat to fishing in the sea off Mutur, Mulativu and Alampil, says the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS).

The Sri Lanka Navy has permitted fishermen to fish in the sea up to 4km. from the coast daily between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. Although regulations in force permit the use of 10 hp engine motor boats only, the Navy has allowed on humanitarian grounds the use of engines up to 15 hp. Already about 400 boats are operating in this area. Beach seine fishing is also permitted in the area.

The Sri Lanka Navy also provides security to the fishermen.
