International conspiracy to establish permanent UN Monitoring Mission in Sri Lanka
- Defence Spokesman

[Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - 5.30 GMT]

Government Defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the media yesterday (14) that there is a conspiracy by international organizations with the objective of establishing a permanent United Nations Human Rights Monitoring mission in Sri Lanka.

This is evidenced by contradictory and false reports by international figures and organizations on the human rights situation in the country, he claimed.

The Government has called for an explanation from the UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Sir John Holmes regarding his statement to the Reuters to the effect that Sri Lanka was one of the most dangerous places for humanitarian workers, the Defence spokesman revealed.

According to him the Government is also seeking an explanation on his statement that 34 aid workers had been killed, as the government is aware of only the killing of 17 aid workers.

He also said that the International Commission of Jurists is yet to retract an allegation of evidence tampering in the inquiry into the killing of 17 aid workers in Mutur a year ago based on a preliminary report submitted by the Australian forensic expert Mr. Dodd, though the latter had admitted he made a mistake in stating so in that report.

He further said the Government has reasonable doubts that these international figures too are working in tandem with the LTTE and the UNP.
