Justice Bhagwati meets President

COLOMBO: Head of the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) Justice P.N. Bhagwati  and other members of the IIGEP called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (20) to sort out the issues pertaining to the functioning of the Commission appointed by the latter on human rights violations.


The meeting, which was very cordial, focused on ways to carry forward the mandate of the President for a transparent and fair mechanism to monitor and bring to book those responsible for violation of human rights.
  

The 11-member inter-continental experts group led by Justice Bhagwati was invited by the Government in February to oversee the functioning of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (COI) set up in November to investigate prominent cases of human rights violations in the island since August 2005.


Issues discussed included among others witness protection, funding and other logistical matters concerning the COI.


The IIGEP consists of the following Eminent Persons:
Justice P N Bhagwati (India), (France), Judge Jean-Pierre (France) Mr. Mazuki Darusman (Indonesia), Mr. Arthur E. Deutey (USA), Prof. Cees Fasseur (Netherlands) Dr, Kamal Hossain (Bangladesh), Prof. Bruce Mathews (Canada), Mr. Andreas Mavrommatis (Cyprus), Sir Nigel Rodney (UK), Prof. Ivan Schearer (Australia), Prof YokoYokota (Japan).
