[Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 8.30 GMT]

The Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Secretariat (SCOPP) in a statement issued yesterday (29) says resettlement of displaced persons has been completed successfully in Vakarai.

Civilians have been provided with Rs. 120, 000 to build permanent house in addition to certain construction material provided by the Army.

All 12 schools in the area are fully operational with good attendance rates. Already 156 teachers are working in these schools. There is still a 20 percent shortage of teachers.  Almost 90% of the students had received school uniforms but textbooks are still in short supply.

The transport situation has also changed for the better with the operation of 11 buses provided by the government. Besides, the Road Development Authority operates a ferry service at Verugal Aru for both vehicles and passengers.

Livelihood development is also taking place, though still at a slower pace.
