The Government launched a three-year National Campaign to Promote Indigenous Food Products today (03).

Speaking at the occasion of the launch  held at the Youth Services Centre, Maharagama President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that this campaign would not only promote indigenous food production but also would consolidate our national independence. He pointed out how our national independence was threatend every time we distanced ourselves from agriculture. Annually we spend billions of rupees on food imports and saving  this amount would contribute to the strengthening of our independence, the President concluded.

Appealing to political parties, Members of Parliament, public servants, community organizations, youth organizations and all citizens the President asked all of them to start cultivating home plots." A single plant in one's garden is worth more than a thousand statistics", he stressed.

The Government will re-establish the Paddy Marketing Board, develop the co-operatives and the CWE, improve rural infrastructure, open Agricultural Service Centres and fertilizer depots to assist the farmers, he added.

The Government has decided to develop the right bank of the Mahaweli to accelerate the food production drive in the Eastern province which was the granery of the country during the time of our ancient kings, the President further said.
