Defence spokesman
Although there are many reports in the international media that the Government is extending its military operations in the North with the liberation of the Silavatura area from the LTTE, the Government has no problems about liberating its own territory, and its policy is to ensure the security of both the people and the country, said the Defence spokesman, Minister Keheliya Rambukwelle.
Speaking at a Media Briefing today (Sept 03) the Minister said there was no change in the Government’s position regarding a resolution of the ethnic issue and the holding of peace talks. He said it was the LTTE that had left earlier negotiations by using various unacceptable excuses.
As long as the LTTE acted in a manner that showed its belief in the gun and bomb, the Government has a responsibility to act in a suitable manner with regard to national security. If the LTTE alters its position and comes for negotiations, the Government was ready to meet such a development, the Minister said.
Minister Rambukwelle said the recent events in Oslo showed the LTTE is expanding internationally and also drew attention to activities of the LTTE reported from Britain, Australia and Thailand.
Military spokesman
Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said four villagers had been seriously wounded
in an attack by the LTTE at the village of Ethavetunagama in Weli Oya
today, and the security forces would have to carry out humanitarian
operations to prevent such attacks of civilians by the LTTE.
