Swift reaction to tsunami
warning
[Thursday, September 13, 2007 - 6.00 GMT]
The National Disaster
Management Centre issued a tsunami warning at about 5 p.m. yesterday
(12) after receiving information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre
about the possibility of a tsunami hitting the coast of Sri Lanka
following the occurrence of a massive earthquake of magnitude 8.2 on the
Richter scale in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Authorities transferred residents along the coastline in the East, South
and West of the country to places of safety. Train services along the
coastal line were halted and road transport along the coast was diverted
through roads in the interior.
The authorities kept on monitoring the situation and lifted the warning
around 8.30 p.m. when it became clear that there was no danger of a
tsunami hitting our shores.
A powerful tsunami hit Sri Lanka on December 26, 2004 killing around 40,
000 persons and displacing many more.
