President asks TUs to join nation building
[Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 8.00 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa called upon the trade unions to join the nation building effort without limiting themselves to struggles for wages and privileges when the Government has liberated the east from terrorism and has launched a massive development programme.

This call was made when the trade union representatives met the President at Temple Trees, Colombo yesterday (9) to put forward their proposals and suggestions for the forthcoming Budget 2008.

Trade union leaders thanked the President for the opportunity provided to them to forward their proposals and suggestions on the budget. They stressed the importance of controlling fuel consumption in view of escalating prices and called for measures to raise productivity and reduce expenses in the public sector. They also pledged their support to the Food Production Campaign of the Government.
