Balance of payments stands at US$ 81m

The overall balance of payments registered a surplus of
US dollars 81 million and the gross official reserves stood at US
dollars 2,610 million (3.0 months of imports) by end August 2007, said a
press release issued yesterday (22) by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
It also said:
“The cumulative exports during the first eight months grew by 11.7 per
cent from US dollars 4,411 million in 2006 to US dollars 4,927 million
in 2007. Higher growth of exports over the growth of imports narrowed
the cumulative trade deficit for the first eight months from US dollars
2,401 million in 2006 to US dollars 2,122 million in 2007. Private
remittances grew by 17.0 per cent to US dollars 1,758 million during the
first eight months of 2007, containing the current account deficit.”
