The new bridge across the Mahaweli River at Manampitiya, Polonnaruwa will consolidate the friendly relations among Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities, said president Mahinda Rajapaksa at its opening ceremony.

This bridge spanning 302 metres is the longest in Sri Lanka. Built with Japanese assistance at a cost of Rs.1500 million, it is considered a symbol of Sri Lanka - Japan friendship. Built within two years it stands as a monument to the efficacy of Mahinda Chintana policy, which is oriented towards taking development to the village.

The President also said that with the liberation of the Eastern province from the clutches of terrorism, an opportunity has arisen for accelerated development in the region. Seven large bridges are under construction at present in the region, he revealed. He appealed to the people to give their support to the Government’s drive to wipe out terrorism from the entire country.
