Move from words to deeds, FM tells SAARC
[Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 6.00 GMT]

SAARC must lead a concerted campaign against the phenomenon of terrorism. Our collective efforts to address the scourge of terrorism need to move beyond declaratory statements, for evolving comprehensive practical measures to strengthen security for our countries, said Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama addressing the Second Meeting of SAARC Interior/Home Ministers held from October 25-26, 2007 in New Delhi.

He called for the re-energisation of the SAARC Terrorist Offences Monitoring Desk and the SAARC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk (SDOMD). He assured the SAARC that that Sri Lanka for her part will continue to work for the enhanced effectiveness of these two mechanisms, both through providing them as we have always done in the past the necessary logistical support, as well as by sharing the data we acquire of relevance to the region.

The Minister also expressed Sri Lanka’s readiness to host the 02nd Meeting of the Legal Advisors early next year, to build on the work already accomplished and to ensure that a Mutual Legal Assistance regime that is acceptable to all, becomes a reality within a foreseeable future.

He also urged all Member States to become parties to the existing international Conventions on terrorism, so that the International Treaty Network, which seeks to preclude the grant of safe haven to terrorist offenders, is further strengthened.
