President meets regional health delegates
[Thursday, November 01, 2007 -
9.00 GMT]
Delegates attending the World Health Organization (WHO)’s South East
Asian Regional Workshop on Recent Developments in Essential Medicines
currently being held in Colombo met President Mahinda Rajapaksa
yesterday (October 31) at Temple Trees, Colombo.
It was Sri Lanka’s Prof. Senaka Bibile who first prepared a List of
Essential Medicines in 1959. It was this list that was taken as a basis
by the WHO to prepare its list of essential medicines in 1977.
Dr. Agostino Borra, WHO representative in Sri Lanka informed the
President that the Workshop is being held in Colombo, as it was Sri
Lanka that pioneered the concept of essential medicines.
President Rajapaksa told the delegates that a new legislation would be
presented to parliament outlining National Drug Regulations.
