Indian elected for the next Commonwealth SG post; proposal was made by SL President

Commonwealth leaders followed by a proposal made by President Mahinda Rajapakse on November 24, 2007 unanimously chose Mr. Kamalesh Sharma, the current Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom to lead the 53-nation. Mr. Sharma is set to officially take over as the next Commonwealth Secretary-General on 1 April 2008.

During the meeting with the Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, President Rajapakse elaborated on the measures taken by his government to find a political solution to the Sri Lanka’s national crisis.

President Rajapakse also met Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and discussed several subjects including potential opportunities for the Malaysian investors in the construction of Colombo – Kandy Highway. 

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng during his bilateral talks with President Rajapakse assured more contribution in security affairs in Sri Lanka and more employment opportunities for the Sri Lankans in Singapore in the future. President Rajapakse also met New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and she said her country is highly concerned about the LTTE activities in Sri Lanka.

Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) concluded in Kampala, Uganda on November 25, 2007.

The next Commonwealth Heads of Governments is to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in 2009, with Sri Lanka earmarked for CHOGM 2011.
