USA, Canada condemn bomb attacks

[Friday, November 30, 2007 - 4.20 GMT]

The Governments of the United States of America and Canada strongly condemned the deadly attacks on civilians occurred in a shopping mall and a government office on November 28 in Colombo and on a bus carrying schoolchildren on November 27 near Kilinochochi.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.  Incidents such as these will lead to further loss of life, destruction, and suffering for the people of Sri Lanka,” a State Department press release said.

The release further stated only a political solution, not a military one, offers a way out of the current cycle of escalating violence.  We call on all Sri Lankans to work toward the goal of a just, political solution to the conflict.

Maxime Bernier, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs in a press release issued yesterday said, Canada strongly condemns the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka and, in particular, the killing of civilians, whether targeted or accidental. Our sincere sympathies are with the families and friends of the victims, irrespective of their ethnicity.

“Canada continues to call on all parties to renounce violence, return to political negotiations and work toward a peaceful resolution to the conflict and urges all parties to respect international human rights and humanitarian law.

The European Union also has repeated its condemnation of the Tamil Tigers for its continued use of violence and terror.

Death toll of the bomb attack targeting civilians in Nugegoda on Wednesday (November 28, 2007) has risen to 22. An LTTE suicide bomber blew her self inside the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare killing another civilian on the same day morning.

Meanwhile UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and several other international organizations including the Amnesty International and European Union also condemned the attacks.
