Japanese assistance to reconstruct tsunami-destroyed Galle harbor

The Government of Japan provided financial assistance worth of Rs. 708 million to reconstruct the Galle Fisheries Harbor under the Non-Project Grant Aid for rehabilitation and reconstruction of tsunami affected areas. The harbor was officially opened on December 01, 2007 with the participation of Mr. Kiyoshi Araki, the Ambassador of Japan, Felix Perera, Minister of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Niyomal Perera, Deputy Minister of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources and Basil Rajapaksa, Adviser to the President and Member of Parliament.

The Galle Fishery Harbor was one of the most affected harbors by the tsunami in December 2004. The reconstructed harbor has facilities including an ice plant with a production capacity of 50 tons per day, cold storage, quay wall, slipway for fishing vessels for safe navigation, winch house, auction hall, two storied building for the office of Ceylon Fishery Harbor Cooperation, a canteen for harbor staff.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assisted in preparation of the designing of the Galle Fisheries Harbor while the Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) supervised the project.

The Government of Japan granted US $ 80 million as Non-Project Grant Aid immediately after the tsunami, to rebuild and reconstruct the lives of tsunami affected. This Grant was utilized for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of a wide range of sectors including fisheries, water and sanitation, health, education, housing, energy and roads in the tsunami affected areas in the North East and South. Tangalle Fishery Harbor was also reconstructed under this grant and commissioned in May.
