President orders urgent imports to offset rice price hike
[Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 10.05 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed that additional imports of rice be made immediately to offset the high cost of rice in the local market and has also ordered the release of 19,000 metric tons of rice lying at warehouses now.

These decisions were taken by the President at a meeting with rice importers, rice mills owners and wholesale dealers at Temple Trees today (January 17).

Rice importers and wholesale dealers pointed out that the main cause for the current rice price hike is the gap between demand and supply. The daily consumption of rice has increased by 2000 metric tons due to the wheat flour price hike and rice traders have failed to meet the market requirement.
