UN, US condemn Buttala attack
[Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 5.55 GMT]

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon strongly condemned the indiscriminate attack on a passenger bus in Buttala targeting innocent civilians.

He urged the parties concerned to undertake genuine efforts to achieve a peaceful negotiated solution in a statement issued yesterday (January 16).

Meanwhile US Embassy in Colombo also condemned the vicious terrorist attack that killed at least 29 persons, including women and children, and injured more than 60 others.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, it bears all the hallmarks of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.  The targeting of civilians serves to foster fear and cause further suffering among the Sri Lankan people, a US Embassy statement said.
