LTTE attempt to kidnap EPRLF Leader foiled

The Tamil Nadu police have foiled an attempt by the LTTE to kidnap Varadaraja Perumal, the Leader of the EPRLF. Eight suspects including Tambidurai Parameswaran alias Nathan alias Surali, an intelligence wing operative of the LTTE has been arrested and remanded.
  
According to the Q branch of the Tamil Nadu Police, Parameswaran has gone to Chennai as a refugee in February 2007 and has obtained a job as a taxi driver.  He has been able to befriend the family members of Varadaraja Perumal and the plan has been to kidnap Perumal and his family members during a wedding reception in February which they would attend.
  
According to the same sources his task was to keep a watch on Perumal and his family members as well as on Minister Douglas Devananda. He is said to have planted a man from Chennai in the office of Minister Devananda.
  
Parameswaran and seven other Sri Lankan Tamils were allegedly also involved in procuring war materials and smuggling them across the sea to the LTTE. They were all charged for conspiracy and under the Foreigners Act. Produced before the Chengalpet Court they were remanded till January 31 and are currently lodged in Puzhal jail.
