[Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 10.40 GMT]

Police stations in the coastal areas of the South India State of Kerala have been placed on alert following reports that that the LTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s wife and others of his family may attempt to seek shelter in the state, due to the current military reversals being faced by the LTTE in Sri Lanka.

The Kerala Government said yesterday (29) that it was verifying reports that Prabhakaran’s wife had taken shelter Kerala, following the increased fighting between the Tamil tigers and the Sri Lankan Army.

State Home Minister Kodiyarii Balakrishnan was quoted in the Deccan Herald saying the government does not have any official information about the whereabouts of Prabhakaran and his family.

The Home Minister has said: “However, police stations in the coastal areas have been alerted as a precautionary measure”, and that the government had decided to set up eight more police stations, equipped with modern gadgets for sea patrolling in coastal areas.
