The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has said the State Government was ready to enact fresh legislation to deal with pro-LTTE activities in the State. He was responding to a special motion moved by the AIADMK and the Congress on the alleged remarks made by Viduthalai Chirthaikal Katchi (VCK) leader Thirumavalan, an ally the Chief Minister, during a public meeting organized in support of the LTTE that is banned in India. Chief Minister Karunanidhi was seeking to avert a major rift between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by him and its key ally the Congress Party, with which the DMK is allied at the Centre too, over the issue of insufficient action against those in Tamil Nadu who support the LTTE. “News Today” reported that for the first time since the DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu in 2006, its trusted ally Congress today staged a walkout in the Assembly, upset as it was on growing words of a support to the LTTE by some political parties such as the VCK. The Congress members trooped out of the House despite Chief Minister Karunanadhi’s assurance to frame a law to take action against those supporting or expressing solidarity to the banned terrorist organization, News Today reported. AIADMK whip KA Sengottaiyan had demanded that government ban the VCK which has been acting against the sovereignty of the nation and in a manner that would create law and order problems. Congress member S. Jayakumar who said some outfits in Tamil Nadu were supporting the terrorist group [LTTE], banned in many countries, asked how the police had given permission to organize a public meeting by the VCK in support of the LTTE, even after the Congress had brought it the notice of the government in advance in the State Assembly. The New Indian Express reported today (Jan 30) that the Congress whip Peter Alphonse had told mediapersons that the party would not tolerate those supporting the LTTE. The government should take action against those who express support to the LTTE directly or indirectly, he said. The Hindu report on the events said “The Congress, a close ally of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, staged a walkout from the Assembly to “convey its sentiments” on the issue of some political parties overtly supporting the banned terrorist outfit, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. They also raised slogans inside the House demanding the arrest of those openly supporting the LTTE in the State.”
