The Government of Japan appreciates APRC proposals as an
important step toward the political solution of the conflict and
sincerely hopes that the devolution will be duly implemented in
accordance with the proposals, said a statement issued by the Japanese
Foreign Ministry on January 25.
“The Government of Japan strongly hopes that a final political solution
will be achieved in a manner that all the parties concerned including
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will be involved,” it added.
Full text of the statement
On January 23, His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, the
President of Sri Lanka, received and accepted the proposals for the
devolution of power to provinces, which was developed by the All Party
Representative Committee (APRC), appointed by the President to solve the
conflict.
The Government of Japan appreciates this as an important
step toward the political solution of the conflict and sincerely hopes
that the devolution will be duly implemented in accordance with the
proposals.
The Government of Japan strongly hopes that a final political solution
will be achieved in a manner that all the parties concerned including
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will be involved.
The Government of Japan, by dispatching the Representative of the
Government of Japan, Mr. Yasushi Akashi, to Sri Lanka from January 13th
to 15th, reiterated its appeal to those concerned that efforts should be
made not for a military solution but for a political solution through
dialogue. The Government of Japan intends to observe closely the
situation in Sri Lanka , and continue to support with the international
community the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka toward the
political solution of the conflict.
