Tamil Nadu to take legal action against LTTE supporters
[Thursday, January 31, 2008 - 8.25 GMT]

The Tamil Nadu State government on Wednesday (January 30) warned that stringent action would be taken under existing law on those who supported the banned LTTE.

Law Minister Durai Murugan made a statement in the State Assembly announcing that any activity in support of the banned outfits is a crime under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and those indulging in such activities would be subjected to legal action under Section 1967 (37/1967).

Earlier, a committee comprising the Chief Minister, Finance Minister, Law Minister and the Police discussed the LTTE issue and concluded that new law was not necessary to take legal action against supporters of banned outfits and the current Provision of 1967 is adequate enough to punish the guilty.
