The E Tuk-Tuk Project, a Sri Lankan innovation of a mobile telecenter using three wheelers has won the Stockholm Challenge award in December 2007 - under the Public Administration category - as a project that tops the list of ICT (Information Communication Technology) initiatives supporting development.

The E Tuk-Tuk is a community building initiative that aims to share the benefits of modern technology with the rural communities and the jury described it as “a project that electronically expands the community center into isolated rural areas.”

The equipment is located in an auto rickshaw, a favoured mode of transport in South Asia. The vehicle utilizing wireless internet connection, loudspeakers and multimedia projectors visit more than 20 villages in Kothmale everyday providing knowledge dissemination, training and participatory programming to the community.

Kothmale Community Radio with Dilmah Tea and UNESCO assistance launched the E Tuk-Tuk Project in Kothmale in 2005.

“We go to the village, mix up with the people and give them a chance to share their views with the others. E Tuk-Tuk also feature success stories of others via multi media projectors to inspire the community,” Controller, Community Radio Sunil Wijesinghe told PRIU.
