[Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 04.50 GMT] Sri Lanka Tourism has joined hands with Qatar based Al Jazeera channel on a major publicity campaign targeting travelers in Middle East, a Sri Lankan tourism media release said. “There is a need to be more aggressive in promoting the country’s image among Middle East travelers. Under the advice of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, I have made special programmes and a strategy to promote Middle East travelers to Sri Lanka,” said Deputy Minister of Tourism Faiszer Musthapa while addressing a stakeholders meeting comprising tourism experts and airline operators in Doha. According to the media release, Sri Lanka will receive editorial coverage, special interviews, exposure on the Al Jazeera website and enhance visibility in the English Channel. “We are looking at this partnership beyond pure commercial transactions. There is a lot to offer from our side and we are a different media agency. We are delighted to assist Sri Lanka Tourism,” Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Al Jazeera Ahmed Al Khulaiff said. Meanwhile Sri Lanka Tourism yesterday (February 13) launched a new strategic plan for year 2008-2010 aimed at earning USD 400 million within this year. “Sri Lanka Tourism mainly focusing on attracting travelers from UK, Germany, France, India, Middle East and Russia,” Managing Director Sri Lanka Tourism Dileep Mudandeniya told media in Colombo yesterday.
