Opposition to Kosovo independence grows

[Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 06.10 GMT]

Opposition to unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) by Kosovo is increasing. More countries are joining the opposition. Already Russia, Sri lanka, China, Indonesia, Azerbaijan and Vietnam have declared their opposition in addition to six countries of the European Union – Spain, Greece, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus.

An attempt by the United States to get UN Security Council approval for Kosovo independence is likely to fail with the opposition of Russia and China , two veto holding permanent members.

Kosovo’s UDI is contrary to international law. It sets a dangerous precedent which could be used by other separatist groups which will lead to destabilization of many countries and even lead to local armed confrontations between states.
