Tamil Nadu intelligence foils smuggling bid

[Friday, February 22, 2008 - 05.00 GMT]

Intelligence officers of the Tamil Nadu police arrested 4 persons, a motor cycle and a van at Sogaiyanthoppu sea shore who tried to smuggle goods to Sri Lanka.

They were identified as K Abdullah (35), S Shajahan (35), M Nawaz Khan (30) and I Mohammed Ebunu.

A red alert had been sounded in Ramanathapuram and its neighbouring districts to trace a mini-van that sped away on sighting the police.

Later, based on the interrogation, a special police party arrested a Sri Lankan national, Arulanandam, from Paramakudi, for assisting these four people to smuggle the goods.

Arulanandam had gone to Tamil Nadu during 1983 as a refugee and was staying in Paramakudi.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Tamil Nadu police.
