“We trust that Cuba
will gain many more achievements and the excellent
relations between our two countries will be further
developed and consolidated under your leadership,”
states President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a message of
congratulations to Mr. Raul Castro, the new
President of Cuba who was appointed last Sunday (24).
The message adds: “You take over the highest
constitutional responsibility of your country, after
the illustrious term of office of your brother,
President Fidel Castro.”
Here is the text of the message
His Excellency Raul Castro Ruz
President of the Council of State and Ministers
Republic of Cuba
Excellency
I write to convey my warmest best wishes to you on
your assumption of duties as the President of Cuba.
I recall with great pleasure my meeting with you
when I attended the last Non-Aligned Summit in
Havana, and the warmth you extended to me and my
wife.
You take over the highest constitutional
responsibility of your country, after the
illustrious term of office of your brother,
President Fidel Castro. Sri Lanka was one of the
first countries that established diplomatic
relations with Cuba soon after the victory of the
Cuban Revolution, in which you too played a leading
role. We will soon celebrate the 50th Anniversary of
the establishment of diplomatic relations between
our two countries.
We trust that Cuba will gain many more achievements
and the excellent relations between our two
countries will be further developed and consolidated
under your leadership.
Let me therefore, Excellency, avail myself of this
opportunity to extend to you on behalf of the
Government and people of Sri Lanka and my own
behalf, our best wishes for your continued success
in the service of your nation.
Please accept, Excellency, assurances of my highest
consideration.
Mahinda Rajapaksa
