The first intake of 175 Tamil stream Police officers
who passed out in February are now deployed at
Police stations in East, Defence spokesman Minister
Keheliya Rambukwella told media in Colombo today
(March 5).
These Police officers who will work around the clock
were trained at the Kallady Police Training School
in Batticaloa, the first Police training school
established in the Eastern Province.“The
government attempted to recruit Tamil speaking
officers prior to the liberation of the East, but
they were threatened by the LTTE” said the Minister.
The Minister further said that the Tamil speaking
community should have the same opportunity as the
Sinhala speaking community when it comes to obtain
the service of the Police and steps will be taken to
recruit more Tamil speaking officers to fill the
vacuum.
