The first SAARC conference on "science-based
agricultural transformation towards alleviation of
hunger and poverty" organised by the Indian
government inaugurated in New Delhi yesterday (March
6). Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Services
Maithripala Sirisena told the Conference that Sri
Lanka would progressively augment its domestic food
grains production to reduce its dependence on
imports.
Minister said that Sri Lanka has accorded "high
priority" to develop biotechnology as a means of
increasing productivity in the agriculture sector.
He welcomed India’s contribution in this area.
The Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research
and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research are
cooperating in agricultural research.
Sri Lanka launched a national campaign 'Api
Wawamu Rata Nagamu' national campaign was launched
in 2006 to motivate domestic food production,
through short — and long-term strategies. The
campaign will last up to 2010.
