The Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore has
warned the public to a number of scams carried out
by unscrupulous recruitment agents who obtain large
sums of money from Sri Lankans with the promise of
education and employment opportunities in Singapore
. A large number of such persons have been abandoned
by their agents upon their arrival in Singapore and
face serious difficulties. Many have been stranded
in Singapore without food, lodging and funds and on
occasions have faced penalties for overstaying their
visa, said a statement issued by the High Commission
on March 14.
The High Commission has intervened on several
occasions to assist these persons by either
facilitating their return home or obtaining an
amicable settlement between the two parties, where
possible.
“Given the increasing number of Sri Lankans that are
being duped by these agents, the High Commission
wishes to warn the public against these unscrupulous
agents and recommended verification of their bona
fides, before making any financial commitments with
respect to education and employment opportunities in
Singapore” the statement added.
