Indian Air Force has installed sophisticated radar
with all modern systems available for aerial
surveillance. Southern Air Command, Air Vice-Marshal
Y R Rane yesterday (17) held discussions with Indian
Air Force and Indian Coast Guard officials at
Mandapam over security arrangements in the Gulf of
Mannar to prevent smuggling and infiltration
operations of the LTTE.
Speaking to media persons later, he said that the
new radar has eight antennae which could cover the
entire Gulf of Mannar region. It had the capability
to track objects such as ships, barges, trawlers,
small boats and others in the Indian territorial
waters off Mandapam coast.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police P.
Rajendiran says that LTTE activity in the state is
under control. He also said that 60 check posts have
been set up along the coastal areas to intensify
patrolling to check infiltration of the LTTE into
the state.
In another development, the Tamil Nadu Police has
now detained an LTTE agent named Abdul Kareem under
the National Security Act (NSA). He was earlier
arrested by Tamil Nadu police at Keezhakarai in
connection with the seizure of 50,000 batteries by
Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recently. The batteries
were allegedly being smuggled to Sri Lanka for the
LTTE. Preliminary investigations had revealed that
Abdul Kareem was the mastermind behind the smuggling
operations.
