issued by the Sri Lanka High Copmmission in London
on April 3.
Foreign Minister Bogollagama explained the steps
taken by the government to take the political

by the military. He added that the recent local
government elections in areas which had been under

people and creating space for the emergence of a
pluralistic political environment.
He stated that the participation of nearly all
political parties represented in parliament at the
forthcoming provincial council elections would
further consolidated the foundations of democracy
With regard to the UK government's concerns about
the human rights situation, Minister Bogollagama
emphasized the need to give credence to the
improvements on the ground situation over the last
year whilst recognizing ground realities.
Both Ministers acknowledged the longstanding close
and cordial relations between the two countries and
the need to remain closely engaged. Minister
Bogollagama's invitation to Lord Malloch Brown to
visit Sri Lanka as part of their continued
