Floods, landslides hit many areas

Floods and landslides caused by torrential rain have left many families in Ratnapura, Kalutara and Galle homeless.

According to Disaster Management Centre statistics, 116 families in Ratnapura, a severely affected district, were affected by floods and 88 were homeless.

A disaster situation has been declared yesterday (April 28) in Ratnapura following extensive floods.
Six deaths have been reported on April 27 in Ingiriya, Kalutara due to landslides.

National Disaster Management Centre, according to the Disaster Management Ministry is collecting information to finalise correct figures on damaged houses with the assistance of district and divisional secretaries. Compensation will be provided to families of victims under the Relief Assistance Scheme.

Meanwhile the Meteorolgy Department yesterday warned the public to be vigilant of sudden landslides that could occur in eight districts Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle and Matara.
