SC rejects petition against PC dissolution

Supreme Court today dismissed the petition made by the UNP challenging the dissolution of the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils.

The Government dissolved the two Provincial Councils on June 10.

The main opposition UNP on June 13 filed two fundamental rights petitions challenging the dissolution of the two Provincial Councils and against the move to conduct fresh elections for the respective Provincial Councils.

They said the purported dissolutions were illegal, invalid and arbitrary made for collateral purpose and was in abuse of the respective Governors’ power and violated their fundamental rights.
