Promptly implement Govt decisions, President tells Secretaries

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed Ministry Secretaries to take prompt action in implementing the decisions taken by the government for the welfare of the people.

The President gave these directions when he presided the fifth Ministerial Sub-Committee meeting on 'Food Security' and 'Cost of Living Regulation' at Temple Trees on Tuesday.

President directed the Trade and Commerce Ministry officials to take measures in slashing the rice price by next week. In so doing, President pointed out that the purchase price of paddy should not fall excessively in a manner detrimental to the local farmer.

In a bid to protect the indigenous farming industry and to encourage the cultivation of fallow lands, the President had also directed the relevant officials to probe into the possibility of offering a higher price for paddy.

The conservation of power which is generated at an exorbitant cost, was also discussed at length. On a concept of President Rajapaksa, it was decided to use 'Solar Power' in street lighting and also to distribute two CFL lamps free, to each household, via the CEB, in a bid to popularise same among the consumers.

The limitation of diesel-oil sourced power, the distribution of oil via CTB depots by the next two weeks, the mandatory selling of a sufficient quantity of their fish-catch to the Fisheries Corporation by every vessel landing at any commercial port, the use of Phosphate as an alternate Chemical Fertiliser, had also come up for discussion.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka, Ministers D.M. Jayaratne, A.H.M. Fowzie, Bandula Gunawardena, Kumara Welgama, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Felix Perera, President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Ministry Secretaries participated.
