New IGP to assume duties today

 

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne will assume duties as the new Inspector General of Police today (July 1), taking over the reins from IGP Victor Perera.

DIG Wickremaratne, a student at Thurstan joined the police Force in 1974 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police in 1983. He was promoted as a Senior SP in 1989 and Deputy Inspector General of Police in 1993.

Wickremaratne is a member of the National Dangerous Drug Control Board, Director National Child Protection Authority, Council Member of the International Police Organisation, Secretary and the President of the Police Savings Association.

He was also the President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Kabadi Federation in 2001 and Chairman of the Police Kabadi Tournament Committee since year 2000.

Meanwhile, the outgoing IGP Victor Perera met President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday at Temple Trees to bid farewell before going on retirement.
