Kankasanthurai cement factory to recommence production soon

The government plans to recommence cement production at the Kankasanturai Cement Factory in Jaffna Peninsula after selecting a suitable investor to form a joint venture with the Sri Lanka Cement Corporation (SLCC) and Lanka Cement Limited (LCL).

A proposal submitted by the Minister of Industrial Development Kumara Welgama in this regard was approved by the Cabinet today.

Two cement manufacturing plants belonging to the state-owned SLCC and LCL have remained closed since 1990 due to the on going ethnic conflict. The two factories are in area now controlled by the security forces.

Production and operation of the two state-owned cement manufacturing plants was disrupted due to the conflict and remained closed since 1990.
